"A statement before the art."

Do Not Masturbate is a conceptual piece — half artist statement, half threshold ritual. It sits at donotmasturbate.xyz as a single page of writing that you have to read before you see anything else.

The premise: there was an underground comic strip artist in the 70s named Robert Crumb. There's a famous strip of his where a young man comes into possession of a headless woman's body and uses it as you'd expect. Crumb later admitted in a documentary that he masturbated to his own work — at which point, by his own framing, the satire became pornography.

The argument the site makes: art only becomes pornographic at the moment of consumption. So before you see anything I've made in this space, I'm asking you to assert that you won't make it that. It's a small contract between artist and viewer. Whether you keep it is between you and the screen.

"I want to make it clear that I am a firm believer that none of the art here can be considered porn unless someone masturbates to it."
